When Lisa McGee was in the middle of writing Derry Girls’ third season, Covid struck. The world shut down – and so did filming for the last season of the beloved comedy series.At a loss for what to do, McGee’s brain got to work. “I had this idea and I wrote a pilot in the gap when I couldn't do anything on Derry Girls and kind of just put it away,” she tells me.Fast forward five years. Derry Girls is over, and that pilot is now about to become McGee’s latest show, How To Get To Heaven From Belfast. As the title implies, it’s set in Northern Ireland, like her previous work – but there are a few key differences.For one, it takes place in the present day. And second, its protagonists are much older: three women in their mid thirties, who come together to solve a mystery when an old schoolfriend, Greta, winds up dead.
